So You Want To Be A Firefighter?

 
As an active firefighter in our company you will be expected to be just that, active. You will need to attend at least one company meeting a quarter and at least 6 in-hall trainings every year. New firefighters must take the state Firefighter 1 course and be state certified as soon as possible. Training you may take includes courses on firefighting, victim extrication, rescue strategies, apparatuses operation, and basic EMT. All training is free to members and is essential for effective firefighting and EMS. You may take as much or as little training as you wish.

After your first year in the company you will be able to run for and vote for officer positions. It is encouraged that you participate in both running for positions and voting for them. Since voting is conducted at meetings, you are encouraged to attend as many meetings as possible.

Our company softball team is repeatedly one of the best in our division. Any member of the company may participate on the team, whose season runs from May to August. The summer time is filled with enjoyable activities for our members, including picnics, dinners, conventions, and trips. All of these events are intended to enhance the resounding feelings of camaraderie present between the members of the company. Members also have access to all of the recreational and fitness facilities at the hall.

In the end you are joining because you wish to serve the community, receive excellent training, respond to exciting calls, and have fun doing it. Your time with the company will undoubtedly be rewarding and give you a great sense of self-satisfaction. In addition, after five years of meeting service reward requirements you will be eligible for monetary retirement benefits.

The Minimum Requirements

 
  • The applicant must be 18 years of age or older
    **For applicants 16 or 17 years of age you may be eligible for probationary firefighter status
  • The applicant must live in Woodlawn or an adjoining district of Hamburg
  • The applicant must not have any arson convictions or felony convictions
  • The applicant should not have any serious physical limitations that would hinder his ability to perform the duties of a firefighter

Before we start with the application you need some background information on how this process will work. You will fill out our PDF membership application on-line and print it (you need Adobe Reader to fill in the application, which you can get here for free). After printing the application you will need to sign it, confirm that the information you provided is accurate and then mail or fax it to the fire hall for consideration.

Once we receive the application it will be considered at the next company meeting and either accepted or rejected. If it is accepted you will be contacted to set up a date for your investigation. The first meeting after your investigation a membership vote will be taken to determine if you are to become a member. If you get the majority vote you will be the newest member of the Woodlawn Fire Company.
